In “My Grandma Has No Hair”, a little boy discovers his grandmother has been wearing a wig for most of her life due to alopecia. While he learns compassion and resilience from his grandmother, she in turn learns about acceptance and courage from her 7 year old grandson. This inspirational story demonstrates the capacity for change at any age, and the depth of compassion and empathy of which a young child is capable. This is a lovely, narrative story with delightful illustrations. In addition to helping parents and teachers to find different ways to broach personal and difficult subjects, this story also helps children to learn to see past the surface of a how a person looks and start to value the unseen and remarkable assets like courage, kindness, empathy, and acceptance of everyone’s differences. The central character, Joshua, is a bright, engaging, creative little boy whose love for his grandmother shines through in his desire to help her find the courage to present herself to the world without her wig.
